Project 5 - Final Piece

 This is my final piece.

For this project I used a stained glass window outline as a template for my photos, a cobblestone wall texture for the background, a stone Tudor rose for the centrepiece, and 36 of my photos from my trip to England and Wales this past fall.

The idea for this project came from my time in the UK. I visited many castles and churches and saw many stained glass windows. Stained glass is one of my favourite things to look at, so I wanted to create a piece of my own. The type of window I created is called a Rose Window and is typically at the focal point of a church. See the circle at the centre of Notre Dame? That is a Rose Window.

I wanted to make the image look realistic enough that it could be believable that could be found in an English cathedral.

I used the blend layers tool, and masks to darken and blend the stone texture and the background of the rose to create the dark stone finish with the small bits of white peeking behind.

As this piece has a personal meaning for me, I feel that it is celebratory. It is a memento of one of the best trips I have been on. However, someone else would see it as ambiguous without knowing the story behind it.

I have taken the idea of a stained glass window and changed it into a digital form. It may have the shape of a stained glass window, but it does not have to same properties (letting sunlight through). Here I have created something that while inspired by a physical object, exists only in a digital form.

Here, my photographs are seen as a collective. When I talk about my trip to friends and show them pictures, they see only one photo at a time. In this piece, you can look at all the photos at the same time and identify similarities or differences between them.
